Independent price-match watch
Which Canadian grocery stores price match in 2026?
No retailer publishes this comparison — so we did. Every claim below is checked against the banner's own policy and dated. Tap any store for the full policy, the fine print, and how to actually get the match at the till.
The finding
Only 2 of 5 of these banners still price match.
FreshCo and No Frills will match a competitor's flyer — and even they hedge it (read the fine print below). The rest — Food Basics, Metro, Sobeys — don't offer a standard price match at all.
| Banner | Price matches? | What counts as a competitor | Proof required | Key exclusion | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food Basics Metro Inc. | No price match | Not applicable — Food Basics runs no price-match program, so it names no competitors to match. (Discount rivals No Frills and FreshCo instead name Food Basics as a competitor they will match against.) | Not applicable — cashiers do not accept competitor flyers for a price match. | There is no price-match program to carry exclusions. Food Basics' own savings are its weekly flyer, private labels (Irresistibles, Selection), a Tuesday student discount, and rainchecks (10% off when an advertised item is out of stock) — none of which is a competitor price match. | July 25, 2026 |
| FreshCo Empire (Sobeys) | Price matches | Up to four named discount competitors in your store's trade area — in Ontario: No Frills, Food Basics, Real Canadian Superstore and Walmart. Applies to identical items (same brand, size, attributes) or a comparable private-label item. Excludes competitors' online/e-commerce pricing. | Yes — the competitor's price in their current flyer (print or digital). Digital flyer screenshots (e.g. Flipp) are accepted if the validity dates are visible. | Competitor e-commerce / online pricing, and competitor misprints | July 25, 2026 |
| No Frills Loblaw | Price matches | A "Major Supermarket Competitor" listed for your local store's geographic trade area; the list varies by store and is set at No Frills' discretion. The item must be identical (same brand, type, size and measurement) or a comparable private-label item. | Yes — the competitor's complete current ad (digital or print flyer) with valid dates, shown before the item is scanned. | "Spend X Get X", "Free", and email/online-exclusive offers | July 25, 2026 |
| Metro Metro Inc. | No price match | Not applicable — Metro operates no price-match program, so there is no competitor definition. | Not applicable — Metro does not accept competitor flyers for price matching. | There is no price-match program to carry exclusions. Metro's own savings are its weekly flyer and everyday low prices, manufacturer coupons, and the moi (metro&moi) rewards program. Its "Freshness Guaranteed" promise is about product satisfaction, not competitor prices. | July 25, 2026 |
| Sobeys Empire | No price match | For the Verified Prices points program (Atlantic Canada only): pre-selected "competing supermarkets" — brick-and-mortar only (e.g. Atlantic Superstore, No Frills, Walmart, Your Independent Grocer), excluding online/e-commerce — and only on identical items Sobeys has flagged with the "Verified Prices" icon in its own flyer. There is no general, customer-initiated competitor price match. | None from you — Sobeys pre-verifies competitors' flyers itself. You just show your Scene+ card and the points difference is credited automatically. You can't bring in a competitor flyer to match an unmarked item. | Atlantic Canada only (NS, NB, NL, PEI); applies only to flyer items bearing the "Verified Prices" icon | July 25, 2026 |
