Who owns Canada's grocery stores?
A small set of parent companies sits behind many familiar banners. This map connects parent companies to retail banners and separately records important group-owned label portfolios using corporate filings and retailer sources. It does not assume every banner carries every label.
Scope: this is a shopper-oriented map of the five large grocers discussed in Canada's Competition Bureau market study, plus prominent banners and own brands relevant to Faircart. It is not a complete registry of every Canadian grocer, franchisee, co-op or independent store.
The ownership map
Portfolio ownership is separate from banner-level availability, which varies by province, store and product.

Kirkland Signature is Costco's private-label portfolio. This does not promise that every Kirkland product is stocked at every Canadian warehouse.
What ownership does tell you
It identifies corporate control, banner families and the owner of a label portfolio. It also explains shared loyalty ecosystems: FreshCo and Sobeys use Scene+; Food Basics and Metro use Moi; No Frills, Loblaws and Real Canadian Superstore participate in PC Optimum.
What ownership does not tell you
A shared parent does not make two banners identical. Formats, assortments, label availability, pricing, promotions and price-match rules can differ. A parent-owned label is not evidence that every banner or store carries it.
